If one of the carport builders in your local area has agreed to construct a carport for you, here are two tips that you should bear in mind when planning the construction of this feature.
Ask the builder to construct a slanted or curved roof
Quite a lot of carports have flat roofs. However, it is probably best to ask the builder to make this part of your carport slanted or curved, rather than flat.
The reason for this is that if you live in a place where it snows and rains quite heavily during the winter and the roof of your carport is completely level, the rainwater and snow that land on this surface won't immediately trickle off but will instead pool on the roof until the sun comes out and dries up all of the moisture. If the materials that the roof is made from are left to soak in water for several days or weeks at a time, they will probably degrade far more quickly than if the roof were angled in such a way that this water could drip off of it.
A curved or slanted roof is also more suitable than a flat roof if the carport will be connected to a wall that features a window, as a roof that has a steep angle or curve will be much harder for would-be burglars to climb up when attempting to access this window.
In short, you should only have your builder make the carport's roof flat if you live somewhere where it rarely snows or rains and if the carport will not be attached to one of your property's walls.
Think about future vehicles you might buy when building this structure
It's important to think about vehicles you might buy in the future when you're building this structure. For example, if you will be retiring in a couple of years and plan to buy a mobile home and go on lots of camping trips when you no longer have to work, then you might want to have the builder make the carport a bit taller than is currently necessary, as this will enable you to park your mobile home inside this structure in a few years' time.
Similarly, if you intend to buy a boat at some point, you might want to make the carport big enough to fit both your car and an average-sized boat inside it. Doing this will ensure that if you eventually buy these vehicles, you won't have to knock down the carport and build a new one in order to create a safe and appropriately sized parking space for these new vehicles.
