Starting Out Tips For Self-Employed Contractors

Four Areas Of Your Home That Require Waterproofing

Waterproofing is the process of protecting a home from water damage. It's especially important in areas prone to flooding or leaks, like garages and crawlspaces. There are many different types of waterproofing materials and techniques, but they all have one thing in common: they're designed to keep moisture out of your home.

Here are four areas that require waterproofing:

1. Garages

Garages are often prone to flooding during heavy storms. Water can get in through cracks in the foundation or around pipes or wires that poke through the wall. The best way to prevent this is by installing a waterproof membrane around the outside of your garage walls. If there's already a crack in your garage wall, you should also install a steel-reinforced concrete beam inside it — this will reinforce the foundation and prevent water from getting inside.

2. Crawlspaces

Crawlspaces are especially prone to water damage because they're not covered by a roof the way other parts of the house are, meaning that rainwater has access to them through cracks and crevices in the foundation walls. To protect against this kind of damage, install a layer of waterproof membrane over any cracks before sealing them up with caulking; this will keep moisture from coming into contact with the foundation and causing damage.

3. Roofing

Roofs are one of the most important parts of your home to waterproof. It's where all the water comes in after a heavy rain or snowstorm.

Roofs are designed to keep water out, but they also need to be able to drain moisture when it does get in. The best way to do this is with a roof coating that contains rubberised asphalt. Another way is by applying liquid rubber on top of the existing shingles. This type of waterproofing lasts for several years before needing another application.

4. Bathrooms And Kitchens

Bathrooms and kitchens need waterproofing because they are areas where water is often present. A good way to prevent these problems is by applying an epoxy coating over all wooden surfaces and in between tiles. This is especially important if there's a chance of flooding, as water can travel through cracks and gaps in the flooring. Epoxy coatings also help prevent mould and mildew from growing on surfaces that are constantly wet, such as shower doors.
